Scale and Detail

(Perception is Reality)

The way we view a space, experience a space and enjoy a space, in fact the entire perception of space can be controlled by design, every detail worked out, a balance of form and function.

Focal Point

A focal point is used here to capture the attention of a visitor while the walls and the plantings create an intimate space within a large area.

We can build a garden that can envelope a visitor.

Rustic Arbors

On this project our goal was to remove a visitor from the city environment using rustic arbors, 2-sided sitting walls and large plantings.

Rustic Arbors

This garden was built on the street as a temporary display for the 1998 Rockefeller Center Flower and Garden Show.

Often it is necessary to enhance a small space, a narrow side or back yard. We can use paving variations to control focus and traffic through an area thereby controlling the experience.

Japanese Lantern

In this smaller space stepping stones and a Japanese lantern accent a small water trickle. The attention to detail gives this area interest creating a visual destination in an otherwise low use area.

Viewing a space is using the space

When designing a new garden we first look beyond the existing site and explore the development potential.

This site in Rockefeller Center was temporarily re-landscaped for the 1993 Spring Flower and Garden Show.

The existing features on a property dictate many of the possibilities available and also dictate the scale of the project design. The individual elements must be the same scale and must have a relationship to each other.

Note how the waterfall below fits into the landscape as if it has always been there.

Every part of a project must look as though it belongs and that it enhances the project as a whole.

Long Island Residence

On this project it was important to establish a strong connection between the swimming pool and the construction of the natural landscape.

The same principles apply on larger projects but on a much larger scale.

The smaller the space the smaller the individual features

Over the years we hav.completed many projects. I consider myself fortunate to have been involved in many unique undertakings. Whether large or small every job has its challenges.

RESIDENCE MUTTONTOWN, NY

RESIDENCE MUTTONTOWN, NY

On this project an unused tennis court was transformed into a model train garden. The miniature rock ledges were chosen to resemble the terrain out west. The dwarf plants were also chosen to resemble the western high desert. This garden was built with care after the train tracks were already installed and the mountain and waterfall was built around the tunnel.

Regardless of the size or style of a project it is important to establish a connection between spaces.

On this project we used crab-orchard flagstone and old brick to provide continuity.
